I get a bunch of questions from readers of the blog like "What do I think of this ninjutsu instructor or that Instructor." I do nt really want to voice my opinion of specific people.
Modern ninjutsu today is what it is. Are there those that are more legitimate than others? Sure there is, that is true of all martial arts. There are good instructors and bad instructors legitimate instructors and fraudelent ones. Like there are good lawyers and not so good lawyers, or mechanics, painters, etc, etc.
Basically as an instructor it boils down to are you a good instructor or not. Your work ethic should define you, not who taught you. As an instructor I have had my share of awesome students, good students and mediocre students. So being a good instructor doesn't necessarily mean that all of your students will be good. If such was the case the would have been no shortage of Bruce Lees in Hollywood. His top student could ve step right in and did what he did and then his and then his. Some of Lees student did well and I am sure there are some who did not do anything.
My problem with some instructors is that instead of letting their teaching define them they tend to want to exaggerate the truth making themselves out to be more than what they are. In other words they may feel that their backgrounds may fall short or that maybe the competition against other schools and instructors is to stiff. Who knows what the reasons are.
So they add a little flavor to their backgrounds. It isnt good enough to be a 2nd dan or a 4th dan in ninjutsu. It is nt enough to simply be the head of thier own school, they have to pass them selves off as a master or someone who thier instructor had left them head of the ryu. These embellishments are simply not needed. Again an instructor's own ability speaks for itself or doesnt. I as a martial artists see no need to make exaggerated statements yet there are those that do and do it well unfortunately.
So does it matter that you only got a 4th degree black belt in the Bujinkan, To Shin Do or whatever style one trains in and for whatever reason you cant advance any further. No, it doesnt matter. Some begin their own schools and this is great, nothing wrong with a 2nd or 4th dan starting their own school or even a first dan for that matter. The problem arises when they are teaching, say bujinkan techniques, and calling it another form of ninjutsu and then claiming that this system was left solely to them and the stories go on and on.
Honesty is always the best policy those that feel the need to embellish their backgrounds obviously feel inadequate in some way. It doesnt matter if as an ninjutsu instructor your a product of the ninja boom or if you got your training in a dojo under a grand master or from a homestudy course and only went so far. Be honest about it gaining your black belt is an accomplishment. Dont embellish, you only damage your character. One untrue statement about your back ground begets another and then another. However you got it, simply represent yourself as such, don't mislead others into believing your something that your not. You not only do your students an injustice but you do yourself an injustice as well.
So, be honest, teach and pass on authentic information with integrity to the best of your ability and continue to seek out genuine information.

There are so many conflicts lately into who's new and who's true and from from what lineage are you and so on, but if you have learned a fighting art and its well suited, and everybody that you teach sees and feels the simplicity therein, and the students find it more appealing to the more traditional system that they've known or come from, then i guess there is something in that which you are teaching, i also get frustrated in specially the younger generation, constantly saying 'Shihan is this a ninja technique" and i will alwas say guys there is no such thing as a ninja technique, but if they feel that what they are doing is something great and not seen anywhere else then they can call it that, just not to have that remark elsewhere but, keep it between fellow students alone, its difficult not to impress the younger generation, how simply hasn't seen much techniques rather than the mere kicking and boxing which is found in your average karate or kick-boxing scenario.
As it has i was taught what is believed to be Koga Ryu style with a blend of Bujinkan, but today I have renamed my style HakkoKai Ninjutsu for I have made so many changes and adaptions, that the whole style is filled with nice techniques, which is usually to be seen in or on most Ninjutsu websites or training manuals, but can never lay claim to be bujinkan on koga..and it also saves a lot of energy trying to defend myself in saying that i do koga or bujinkan. Its now my own style, its just that now nobody can or will acknowledge you or grant you any further ranking.
How ironic to see a post entitled "Honesty in Ninjutsu" that deals with Koga ryu or an off-shoot thereof. KOGA RYU HAS NEVER BEEN TAUGHT IN THE USA, OR ANYWHERE ELSE OUTSIDE OF JAPAN, so the whole system, as presented today, is not ninjutsu at all, but rather some mish-mash of karate or aikido dressed up and call ninjutsu. ALL so-called Koga Ryu ninjutsu teachers are frauds, whether they know it or not.
